ARCHITECTURE & STRATEGY READOUT

Two Engines,
One Book of Business

Prepared by Ed Smith · Chief Architect · For Bob and advisor
THE THESIS

Three sentences

01
The MSP earns the client

It is what they sign, what they renew, and what they call about.

02
Vantage keeps them

Their front door, their leads, their reputation — running on our engine.

03
AI carries the load

A small team delivering both, without hiring in proportion.

SAID UP FRONT

The bundle we thought was our moat
is now table stakes.

That does not break the strategy. It narrows where we compete — and it changes what we should spend the next two quarters doing.

I

The Company

How EdgePointe is structured, and what the second engine adds.

WHERE IT STARTS

One relationship. Two engines.

MANAGED SERVICE PROVIDER

CLIENT
MANAGED INTELLIGENCE PROVIDER
ENGINE ONE

Managed Service Provider

Keep it running, keep it safe, keep it planned.

ENGINE TWO

Managed Intelligence Provider

Own the digital front door and the work behind it.

WHY ONE COMPANY

The shared substrate

Codified expertise

Method written down, not headcount hired

One edge platform

The same worker serves every client

One release process

Every change ships the same way

One client record

Both engines read the same account

THE STRATEGIC POINT

What the second engine changes

MSP alone

Hours you must staff
Outcomes the platform produces
What limits growth

How it grows
By hiring
By deploying

II

The Operating Model

How AI, agents and codified skills become leverage.

THE MECHANISM

Four layers

1
Foundation models

Reasoning — in the surfaces the team already works in, and inside the product itself

2
Skills

Method — a senior practitioner's approach, written down so it runs the same way every time

3
Roles

Judgment — expertise with a point of view, credentialed by framework

4
Guardrails

Permission — what is allowed to ship, and what is not

LAYER TWO

23 skills, installed today

Each one a method written down. Versioned like code — improve it once, and everyone has it.

9
MSP delivery

Managed IT, security, cloud, network, backup, AV, vCIO, compliance

7
Sales & lifecycle

Proposals, onboarding, QBRs, marketing, satisfaction

5
Platform & build

Clone, web design, publish, billing, roles

7
Back office & M&A

Billing, profitability, vendors, hiring, acquisitions

LAYER THREE

Credential by framework,
never by biography

Twelve roles. Each carries a seniority, the named standards it works from, a safety assumption it never relaxes, and a definition of done.

Principal SaaS ArchitectAppSec EngineerStaff SREQA ArchitectvCISOSkeptical Reviewer
LAYER FOUR

Every gate fails closed

Test gate

Zero failures, or no deploy. There is no override.

Blocking lints

Wrong assets, cross-tenant references, banned defaults — all hard stops.

Fresh-context critique

A separate reviewer with no memory of the build grades it.

Human sign-off

The owner approves before anything goes live.

IN PRACTICE

The line

Capture & classify
Enrich & draft
Execute the routine
Watch for regression
The line
Approve or redirect
Own the hard problem
Confirm with evidence
Present and advise
Above it, no person is consumed. Below it, an engineer chooses to act.
BEING PRECISE

What it means. What it doesn't.

It does mean
  • Tier one stops scaling with headcount
  • Delivery artefacts are generated, not assembled
  • A client site is a bundle, not a project
  • One deploy improves the whole book
It does not mean
  • That the business runs unattended
  • That we can take unlimited clients
  • That maturity is uniform across service lines
  • That quality is automatic — the gates do that
III

The Platform

Vantage end to end — and the engineering standards behind it.

THE PLATFORM

One worker. Every client.

No per-client code anywhere in the system.

REQUEST
Resolve tenant → auth guard → cache → route
SERVICES
36 modules — website, leads, reputation, booking, SEO, AI, billing, security
RENDER
Theme tokens + layout + content, resolved at the edge into one document
STORES
System of record · page cache · asset store · inference
Every integration is config-gated. A missing credential switches a feature off — it never breaks a page.
HOW A SITE IS MADE

Described, then rendered

WebDesigner

A seven-step wizard. Gated, quarantined, preview-fenced.

The bundle

Identity, theme tokens, content, assets. A description of a site — not a site.

The engine

Generic by construction. 33 section modules. It knows no client by name.

THE COMMERCIAL CONSEQUENCE

Generic by construction
is the whole business model.

Improve it once, and the entire book improves at the next deploy. Build a client site, and it costs a bundle to author — not a project to scope, staff and negotiate.

THE SALES INSTRUMENT

Clone to Elite

CAPTURE

Read in a real browser. Copy verbatim, colour from the logo, every asset checked.

MEASURE

Numbers before eyes. Tolerances stated, cheapest correction first.

BUILD

Better than the original, using their own proof. Never invent what is not there.

SCORE

Completeness, parity, quality — graded by a reviewer that did not build it.

SHIP

Through the same pipeline. Then the reach tools switch on.

RELEASE DISCIPLINE

Nobody deploys by hand

EDIT
GATE
COMMIT
PUSH
DEPLOY
VERIFY
A stale primary host rolls back automatically. This step exists because pushes were once lost silently — and nobody noticed.
DATA & TENANCY

Four layers of recovery

One database, one cache, one asset store — separated at every layer that touches them.

Content versions

Every section snapshotted before it changes

Live-edit-safe seeding

A re-seed never silently overwrites an owner's work

Point-in-time recovery

Any moment in the last thirty days

Deploy rollback

The previous version, one command away

SECURITY & ISOLATION

Layered, and fail-closed

PERIMETER — unknown host returns a 404. No default tenant.
ASSET LAYER — the worker runs before any file is served
IDENTITY — passwordless, hashed, rate-limited. No stored passwords.
SESSION — signed, expiring, HTTP-only
AUTHORISATION — owner or staff. Nothing in between.
What we are not claiming: no penetration test, no SOC 2, no incident-response retainer. Fine for the clients we have. Not fine for the ones we might want.
IV

The Honest Read

Where the moat closed, and where it holds.

STATED PLAINLY

What we can stop claiming

The bundle itself — every large platform ships it now
AI chat on a website — a checkbox, bought in an afternoon
The category name — owned by a distributor with more money
Better-looking than a template — table stakes, not an argument
WHAT ACTUALLY HOLDS

Narrower. Harder to copy.

We already hold the account

Every competitor has to buy the customer. We are already in the building.

We own the engine outright

No reseller margin. Nobody can reprice us out of our own product.

The pipeline wins the meeting

Arrive with their site already rebuilt. A demonstration, not a pitch.

It defends the core business

A client running their front door on our platform is not shopping their IT contract.

PART FIVE

Four decisions

1
POSITIONING
Does the MSP lead every sale, with Vantage as the attach?
2
FOCUS
Do we stop feature work for two quarters and finish billing plus one channel?
3
RISK APPETITE
What is the security bar before we sell into a regulated client?
4
GOVERNANCE
What does the advisor want to see, in what form, and how often?
IF WE AGREE

The next ninety days

FIRST 30
Close the gap between delivered and billed
31–60
Prove one acquisition channel properly
61–90
Raise the floor under the platform
Nothing on that list is a new feature. If we are still adding features in November, this plan did not happen.

The MSP earns the client.Vantage makes them ours to keep.AI is how a small team does both.

Every architecture in this film corresponds to code running in production today, behind a gate that has to pass before anything ships. The constraint is not engineering — it is going to market.
